Three Days of Adventure: From Mysuru to Coonoor

Day 1: Dawn Departure and Jungle Escapades

Our adventure began at the crack of dawn. My friend Gaurav and I revved up our bike in Mysuru at 5 AM, eager to set off on our journey to Coonoor. Our first major stop was the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, renowned for its wildlife and elusive tigers.

The morning light was magical as we rode through Bandipur. We were fortunate to spot a stunning peacock with its feathers gleaming in the sun. I captured a video of this beautiful bird, and I’ll share some photos to show its vibrant beauty.

Navigating through the dense jungle was exhilarating. While we didn’t hear any tiger roars, the thought of encountering one kept us on high alert. The winding roads and steep inclines made the ride thrilling. After making it through the jungle, we emerged with a mix of relief and exhilaration.

A Monkey Business Adventure

Around noon, we came across a river in the jungle—a perfect spot for a break and some photos. I had my power bank, charger, and other electronics packed in a plastic bag, hoping to keep them dry if it rained. I set the bag down, unaware of the trouble it might cause.

Out of nowhere, a monkey appeared, drawn to our stuff. Before we could react, the monkey grabbed the plastic bag and scampered up a tree with it. We were stunned! The monkey, clearly thinking it had found a tasty treat, made off with our electronics. Thankfully, our mobiles were safe in our pockets, but our other gear was now in the monkey’s clutches.

In a panic, Gaurav and I tried to retrieve our belongings, only to find ourselves surrounded by a troop of monkeys. They seemed aggressive, making the situation even more chaotic. We decided to negotiate. I tossed a packet of chips towards the monkey, hoping it would trade the electronics for the snack. To our relief, the monkey took the chips and dropped the charger. I captured a video of this unusual transaction—definitely a memorable story!

A Slithering Surprise

Just when we thought the excitement was over, something even more unexpected happened. As we continued on our journey, a snake suddenly slithered out and came right under my bike. My heart skipped a beat as I swerved slightly to avoid it. Unfortunately, the snake was caught under the tire, and we could see it getting hurt a little bit.

Fortunately, the snake managed to cross the road and slither away into the bushes on the other side. We didn’t stop to check on it, but we were relieved that neither the snake nor we were seriously harmed. It was a close call that added yet another layer of thrill to our adventure.

A Cool Mountain Escape

As we continued our ascent up the Nilgiri Mountains, the temperature dropped significantly. We stumbled upon a charming little tea shop run by an elderly couple. The shop was a cozy haven for travelers like us, offering warmth and a perfect place to rest.

Behind the shop was a massive ditch that created a stunning waterfall. The sight and sound of the cascading water added to the shop’s serene atmosphere. It was like discovering a hidden gem, with the powerful waterfall’s roar blending harmoniously with the tranquil mountain setting. We decided to relax here for an hour, sipping tea and enjoying the view. Despite being August 14th, we celebrated our own sense of freedom—freedom from routine and cubicles. We enjoyed two rounds of tea and had a delightful conversation with the kind old lady, learning about the challenges and joys of living in such a beautiful, yet remote, place.

Exploring Ooty and Arriving in Coonoor

After our refreshing break, we continued our journey and reached Coonoor via Ooty. In Ooty, it felt like we had been transported to Europe. The views from the roadside were breathtaking. Although we didn’t visit specific spots, the scenic beauty was captivating. We made brief stops at various viewpoints to soak in the picturesque landscapes. The town was bustling, likely because everyone was out enjoying the long weekend.

Finally, we arrived at our homestay in Coonoor, a lovely place near the Coonoor Railway Station. We checked in around 2:30 PM, and our next adventure awaited—the Nilgiri Toy Train. We had booked the train from Coonoor to Ooty for 4 PM and would also be returning on the same train.

The Nilgiri Toy Train Experience

The Nilgiri Toy Train is a charming way to experience the beauty of the Nilgiri Mountains. As we boarded the vintage train, we were treated to stunning views of lush green tea gardens, dense forests, and quaint mountain stations. The train chugged slowly through the hills, offering panoramic vistas and a nostalgic feel. The gentle pace of the train allowed us to fully appreciate the breathtaking landscape, making it a highlight of our adventure.

Our first day was a whirlwind of excitement, beautiful scenery, and unique experiences. From wildlife encounters and monkey mishaps to scenic tea breaks and the enchanting toy train ride, it was a day filled with adventures and lasting memories. Stay tuned as we continue to explore the wonders of Coonoor!
